Gardaí are investigating if a man was stabbed to death by a suspect known to him in Kildare overnight.
Emergency services were alerted to a residential property in Sallins Park, Sallins, at around 3.15am.
A 39-year-old man was discovered with serious injuries and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
At this stage it is believed the victim suffered at least one fatal stab wound.
Another man, aged in his early twenties and who is known to the deceased, was arrested at the scene and is currently being questioned by gardaí.
Both men are understood to be from Eastern Europe originally.
Several other people were in the property at the time and gardaí are investigating if a row broke out which escalated into a fatal assault.
Investigators at Naas garda station have launched a murder investigation and the property has been declared a crime scene.
Members of the garda Technical Bureau were today conducting inquiries at the house and were seen removing several evidence bags.
The victim’s body has also since been removed from the property to the local mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
The suspect is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in Kildare.
He can be questioned for a period of up to 24 hours before he must either be charged or released from custody pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
A Garda spokesperson said that the local Coroner and office of the State Pathologist have been informed, and preparations are underway for a post-mortem examination.
“A senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the inquiry, and an incident room has been established at Naas Garda Station.
“Additionally, a Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been assigned to keep the deceased’s family informed of developments.”
